I’ve written a poem about this painting, which I’ve also called “Virginia.”  Two other women are mentioned, apart from my mother, Virginia.  I decided, some time ago, that this painting would also pay tribute to the girlhood of my friend, Miriam Beerman, a New York artist now in her nineties and still a powerhouse!  “Mother, Beatissima Mater, glorified among all Virginias, / Stood apart in her garden of four o’clocks and zinnias. / Esther waited close by, prepared for Purim’s feast day / With poppy seed cakes, Virginia’s cross, and Miriam’s rose spray.”
