Houdini, Still Struggling for that Final Escape

I was hired by The Detroit News to create an image of Houdini for a special Halloween issue of the newspaper’s weekend supplement, Michigan Magazine, dated October 26, 1986.  This drawing was the final of six illustrations I created for the magazine, from late 1985 – 86.  It remained the only inverted cover portrait ever published by the magazine.  The article it illustrated focused on Houdini’s much-publicized Water Torture Cell escapes (depicted here), his debunking of fraudulent spiritualists, and his final days leading up to his death in Detroit, on October 31, 1926.
